If you’re starting to feel like most days are bad hair days for you, it’s time to get serious about improving the health of your hair. Whether your hair seems to be duller, drier, frizzier, or thinner than usual, there are a few ways you may be able to fix that. Check out the following tips to get healthy hair that looks and feels better than ever.

Wash and Dry the Right Way

Washing your hair is imperative for getting it to look healthy, but not all hair wash routines are created equal. To get the best results, you should first consider your hair type. If it’s oily, you should wash it daily. If it feels dry or is chemically treated, you should wash it less often, such as every few days. Either way, use hair products that are right for your hair type; dry, oily, color-treated, or fine hair.

As you shampoo your hair, focus mostly on rubbing it into your scalp until there are lots of suds. Then it’s time to rinse and apply conditioner. As you condition, make sure to mostly rub the conditioner into the tips of your hair. Then rinse your hair with cool water to close the cuticles of your hair.

Style with Care

Another way to get healthy hair is to take extra care when styling it. For instance, don’t blow dry wet hair right after you get out of the shower. Instead, try to dry it naturally at first by wrapping it in a towel or head wrap; this will cut down on the time you need to use the blow dryer. Plus, as you dry it, avoid using the blow dryer’s hottest settings as much as possible.

You should do the same if you use a flat iron or curling iron, as using very hot settings regularly can damage your hair. You should also apply a heat protectant spray to your hair to reduce any damage your styling tools might cause.

Protect Your Hair

Some activities can damage hair over time, but it doesn’t have to be that way if you take some steps to protect it. For example, regular exposure to chlorine in a swimming pool can damage your hair if you swim often, but you can keep your hair healthy by wearing a swim cap. You can also use hair products made for swimmers, such as shampoo and conditioner that moisturizes the hair after you’re done swimming.

Similarly, if you go outside in the sun a lot, protect your hair from UV rays by wearing a hat or using a leave-in spray that’s SPF 30 or more. And to get healthy hair while you sleep, use a silk pillowcase to reduce the amount of friction between your hair and your pillowcase. You should also think about putting your hair in a bun or braid before bed to protect it.

Adopt a Good Diet

Eating the right foods can lead to healthy hair. That’s because certain vitamins and minerals can reduce the odds of having brittle, thin, or damaged hair. Protein, for example, can strengthen your hair, so eat plenty of eggs, lean meat, beans, and dairy products.

Zinc, iron, and omega-3 fatty acids are also crucial for healthy hair. So make sure you eat a healthy diet full of nuts, seeds, lean meats, fruits, and vegetables to keep your hair looking and feeling its best.
