There are so many hair products on the market these days that the pressure to continually wash and apply lotions is high. But is this the right way to treat our heads? Read on for a few reasons why not washing your hair can be good particularly as it applies to maintaining the overall health of your hair.
Hair Care: Loss of Natural Oils
Washing hair frequently rids the hair of natural oils. Glands within the skin produce sebum and it is this natural oil that keeps hair shiny and healthy-looking. Too much shampoo and frequency of washing can leave hair looking lackluster. Give your hair a break and wash it less frequently.
Hair Care Product Build-Up
If you wash your hair daily and use dyes, spray and other lotions, these products build up around the follicles. This makes your hair look dull, can lead to dandruff and is generally not healthy for hair. Try not washing your hair for one or two days less each week and see what difference that makes to the condition with fewer products being used.
Toxic Chemicals in Shampoo
Some of the mystery chemicals in shampoo are toxic to the body. A recent study found that some shampoo products were as toxic as car fumes. Some of these products contain a substance known as a volatile organic compound. These compounds break down into particles that lead to respiratory problems. The study indicated that pollution is very complex, but some of the bigger problems come from cleaning products and some shampoo.
Environmental Considerations
When there’s a water shortage you may not need to wash your hair so often. For a day, turn off the tap and do something else instead of treating your hair. The environment will have less products seeping into the ocean, and you’ll save on a precious natural resource. Maybe you can make a habit of it and leave out the shampoo for a day or two. You’ll also save money by using fewer cosmetic products.
With the pressure on to use hair products, it is sometimes good to take a break and let your hair have a day off from the shampooing routine. You’ll discover it makes a real difference to the health of your hair, as well as the environment.
