hair lossAs a mom, you have a lot to handle. Whether it’s a full-time job, a busy lifestyle, taking care of the children, or a combination of all three — sometimes things happen beyond your control. Hair loss in women happens more often than you might think. According to the National Institutes of Health, “95 percent of female pattern baldness is androgenetic, meaning that it results from hormonal changes, as in pregnancy or menopause.”

Postpartum Hair Loss

Postpartum hair loss is a common occurrence in many women. Within the first two to six months after having a baby, noticeable loss is not unusual. This is due to the body experiencing high rates of progesterone and estrogen levels during pregnancy. This causes hair to be in an ongoing growth cycle, which levels out after childbirth. The resting stage is about three months where it then falls out and new growth starts.

Hair Loss Due to Aging

Another time where you may notice thinning hair is as you get older. The cycle is similar to childbirth but in the opposite way. As you age, there are lower levels of estrogen and progesterone in the body, which may cause hair follicles to thin and fall out. It can also be due to your body not being able to regenerate or renew cells as fast as when you were younger.

Help for Moms with Hair Loss

If you are a mother who is losing her hair, there are solutions. Most women grow new hair back after postpartum hair loss, and you can have blood tests done to be sure your thyroid is performing properly.

As far as aging, you will also want to see a doctor to see if hormone therapy will work for you. In some cases, you can postpone it by replacing your lost estrogen and progesterone.
