Hair Restoration with Your Own Natural Growing Hair
FUE Hair Transplants Explained
FUE – or Follicular Unit Extraction is a type of permanent, natural hair transplantation that extracts hair follicles from a donor area – typically the back and sides of a person’s head – and transplants them to an area where balding or thinning is occurring such as the top of the head, the temple areas, and the front hairline. Follicular Unit Extraction is a minimally invasive procedure that requires a keen artistic eye and experienced, skilled precision on the part of the hair transplant surgeon to create a natural hair restoration result for the patient.
How FUE Hair Transplantation Actually Works
Hair transplantation using FUE Follicular Unit Extraction is achieved by extracting individual and small groups of hairs utilizing specialized surgical instruments – typically groups of one to four hairs at a time – and transplanting them in balding areas of the scalp. An experienced and skilled hair transplant surgeon will microscopically implant them in an appropriately random pattern.
Great care is taken to implant the hairs in such a way as to mimic hair that would naturally grow in the recipient area, including the angle at which it is transplanted to ensure that the new hair blends naturally with existing hair and recreates a natural pattern of hair growth.
FUE or FUT: What is the Difference?
With FUT (follicular unit transplantation), the hair transplant surgeon removes a donor strip of skin from the back of the patient’s head, and extracts and dissects individual units of hair follicles from the strip, which are then transplanted into the balding area of the scalp. In FUE hair transplantation, the individual follicular units are taken individually from the donor area.
In Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) procedures, the strip of hair is surgically removed from the back of the head and then dissected separately then transplanted into the recipient area. The donor area is then surgically closed. This process typically leaves a noticeable linear scar line along the back of the head when the area heals. In the past, these scars could be quite obvious. With modern hair transplant surgical techniques, however, scarring is in many cases so minimal as to allow the patient to wear extremely short hair styles.
Because FUE hair transplantation does not use this “strip method” of harvesting donor hair but rather individually extracts small random groupings of one to four hairs each, there is no noticeable scarring of the scalp in the donor area.
With respect to recovery time, FUE hair transplantation recovery usually takes about seven days with almost no side effects, whereas in FUT hair transplantation, the entire area where the strip of hair has been removed must heal over, which takes considerably longer.
Both types of hair transplantation, in the hands of an experienced, dedicated hair transplant surgeon can result in a wonderfully natural result.
FUE Hair Transplants: Is It Right for Me?
The first consideration in any hair transplant procedure is determining if you are a good candidate for the procedure. Various factors enter into the outcome, including whether there is healthy hair growth along the sides and back of the head from which donor hair can be harvested. Other factors include hair texture and color, the degree of waviness or curl, and other factors that can affect the final outcome of the procedure.
The best way to determine if you are a candidate for either FUE or FUT hair transplantation is to schedule a private consultation with your hair transplant surgeon who can work with you one-on-one to answer your questions, address your concerns, set expectations, and determine which hair transplant or hair restoration procedure is most appropriate for your particular circumstance and which will deliver the desired results.
During your private consultation, your hair transplant surgeon will also be able to tell you specific details of your surgery such as how long your procedure should take and the cost of your procedure, as well as any financing options you may wish to pursue.
